Fun night at the Sussex Cyclists Wine Tasting. Jim Futrell did his usual amazing job explaining all about wine. Thanks to Heidi Lerchand the Social Committee for organizing this outstanding event!
Sussex Cyclists was well represented in the Maryland Coast Bike Festival. The weather held off and the sun came out making it a good ride and a fun time.
DelDOT will be holding a public meeting and open house on May 21 that includes the SR 1 Low-Stress Bikeways Study. The meeting will be held at the Cape Henlopen High School Cafeteria. 23rd ANNIVERSARY RIDE OF SILENCE Registration Required. Non-Members Welcome
Register Here
Sussex Cyclists is once again participating in the Ride of Silence. This is a worldwide, silent, slow-paced ride (max. 12 mph) in honor of those who have been injured or killed while cycling on public roadways.
WHEN: Wed. May 21st, 6:45 PM Clip-In
WHERE: Behind WAWA, Dartmouth Rd. & Coastal Hwy (Southbound Route 1 in Lewes)
WHAT IS THE RIDE OF SILENCE?
On Wednesday. May 21, 2025 at 7:00 PM, the Ride of Silence will traverse and unite the globe as nothing before it. Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn't aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves.
In 2003, Chris Phelan organized the first Ride of Silence in Dallas after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit by the mirror of a passing bus and was killed.
The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph, wear helmets, follow the rules of the road and remain silent during the ride. There are no registration fees. The ride, which is held during National Bike Month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for and honor the lives of those who have been killed or injured.
The obituary and arrangements for John Kurpjuweit appeared in today's Cape Gazette.
Here are the details:
A celebration of life will be held from 2 to 4 p.m., Wednesday, April 30, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Hwy., Lewes.
In lieu of flowers, the family recommends memorial donations in John’s honor be made to TAAAC-Fee Children’s Fund, 2521 Riva Road, Ste. L7, Annapolis, MD 21401.
On April 4, CoastTV ran a piece on the final stretch of the Georgetown-Lewes Trail. The story includes interviews with Danton Sherwood (Terri Martin’s husband) and Allen Segal—and yes, Denny Shook also makes a cameo on TV!

It is with great sadness that we share the news that our former club president, John Kurpjuweit, passed away this morning. We were notified by his wife, Linda, who asked us to pass this information along to our members.
At this time, we do not have any further details, but we will share any updates as we receive them. Please keep Linda and their family in your thoughts during this difficult time.
Sincerely, Allen Segal, President Sussex Cyclists
There’s a new, easy way to flag issues with biking (and walking) around Lewes whether it’s a pothole, an obscured sign or a sketchy intersection. Just use the QR code below or visit www.ci.lewes.de.us/bikeped.
You can do it from your phone and you can even upload a picture. City staff and the Lewes Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee will follow up on the community’s behalf.
With the weather warming up, now’s a great time to flag issues you see on your rides and walks.
Or visit www.ci.lewes.de.us/bikeped
